Experience Odense in the golden colours of autumn

Autumn is the perfect time for a trip to Odense. The weather is still mild and there is plenty to see and do. Here we offer recommendations for great experiences in Odense.

The city is full of charming pedestrian streets, countless museums and impressive events - and not least there is H.C. Andersen's hometown. Odense - and Funen - offer experiences for everyone.

Visit Hans Christian Andersen’s hometown this autumn

Visit Hans Christian Andersen’s hometown of Odense while bathed in the blazing colours of autumn. Odense is one of Denmark’s oldest cities and everywhere you go you’ll sense the history and heritage of the city. Travel back in time in Odense’s old city centre where Hans Christian Andersen was born and sought inspiration for his many fairytales.

Here you can also experience the Odense’s new attraction, the Hans Christian Andersen House, a total artistic experience where sound, light and architecture combine to let you rediscover Andersen’s famous fairytales and experience them from new perspectives.

The Hans Christian Andersen House opened in the summer of 2021.

Birka The Viking City

Experience a chapter of Danish history

We also recommend a visit to the Funen Village (Den Fynske Landsby), an open-air rural heritage museum where the present meets the past. The village includes more than two dozen furnished heritage buildings, livestock, a windmill and a village pond. Here you can learn about life in rural Denmark in the nineteenth century.

If you crave more history, the Danish Railway Museum is also well worth a visit. As the largest railway museum in Scandinavia, the museum is home to 19 railway tracks with vintage locomotives and carriages. The museum is located just behind Odense Central Station and invites visitors of all ages to explore the history of the Danish railways up-close.

Odense lets you trace its history all the way back to the Viking Age and Iron Age. Here you can learn about what life was like in Denmark when the Vikings took the world by storm.

Culture and experiences

If you are travelling with children, or simply interested in exotic animals, Odense ZOO is open 365 days a year. Odense ZOO is one of Europe’s best zoos and offers a unique and amazing experience for the whole family.

A short drive from Odense you find Egeskov Castle, one of Europe’s finest Renaissance edifices with an impressive parkland, spire, an original castle moat and a knight’s hall. The living castle is a family-friendly destination with large gardens, tree-top walking, a maze and old-fashioned toys. The best thing about the place is that you can enter the castle itself and see its beautiful interiors. Here you can easily spend a whole day enjoying experiences for all ages
