Things to do in Tromsø

Tromsø – known as both the Paris of the North and the Arctic capital – lives up to its many nicknames with a variety of experiences. Spectacular nature, rich culture and genuine Northern Norwegian hospitality await.

Book a fjord tour with lunch or a whale and Arctic wildlife safari, visit the Arctic Cathedral, take the Fjellheisen cable car, and don’t miss the chance to witness the natural wonders of the Northern Lights in winter or the Midnight Sun in summer. Feel free to ask us for more tips on what to do in Tromsø!

Fjord tour with lunch

Join an exotic road trip through valleys and fjords, past oceans and lakes, white beaches and iconic bridges. The journey typically takes you from Tromsø to Sommarøy – one of the most scenic routes in the area.

The trip takes between 4–5 hours, and we recommend bringing warm clothing, even in summer. A meal is included.

Whale & arctic wildlife safari

Hop aboard our fast, modern catamarans MS Rygerdronningen or MS Rygertroll and join an exciting journey into the heart of the whales’ winter territory in the Arctic fjords of Northern Norway.

Here you may witness humpback whales, minke whales, orcas, porpoises, seabirds, and other Arctic wildlife. Thanks to the speed of our vessels, we are often the first to reach the whale sighting areas on each tour, maximising your time with these magnificent creatures.

Experience the Northern Lights

Tromsø’s geographical location makes it one of the best places in the world to see the Northern Lights. And it’s an experience that doesn’t have to cost a thing – just head out to a dark spot away from city lights.

There are also plenty of guided Northern Lights tours for those who prefer extra insight and comfort.

The best chance to see the lights is between September and April.

Fjellheisen cable car

Experience the “top of Tromsø” and enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the city, surrounding mountains, fjords, and islands.

The cable car to Mount Storsteinen takes just a few minutes. If you're up for a challenge, you can also climb the Sherpa steps – 1,200 of them! A visit to the mountaintop restaurant will feel well-earned after the climb. Just check opening hours before you go.

The Arctic Cathedral

The striking and architecturally spectacular Arctic Cathedral is an absolute must when visiting Tromsø. Inspired by snow and ice, the church’s dramatic design and exterior lighting have made it one of the city’s most beloved landmarks.

If possible, try to attend one of the many concerts held here. If you visit during the Midnight Sun season, take note of how the light creates a magical glow through the stained-glass windows – it's truly stunning.
