Our Lady Carmelite Monastery with St. Mariæ Kirke is said to be one of Northern Europe's best-preserved medieval monastic buildings. In 1430, Erik of Pomerania invited the Carmelite monks, the so-called white brothers, to Elsinore and the construction of the monastery began soon after. The church and monastery were completed in their current form around the year 1500.

After the Reformation, the monastery was turned into a hospital and nursing home in 1541. Elsinore's Latin school was also housed here, and during the 19th century the monastery functioned as a retirement home. Since 1991, the monastery buildings have been the administration building for the Diocese of Elsinore. The monastery can be visited during a special tour. The tour includes the Lazarushallen, the Laxmandssalen, the Musikhuset and the Koneloftet.
