The Garden Society of Gothenburg

The Garden Society of Gothenburg, in Swedis called Trädgårdsföreningen, is one of the best preserved 19th century parks in Europe. Here you can stroll among thousands of roses in the beautifully arranged rose parks, enjoy the decorative floral displays and relax in the leafy woodlands. The Palm House, built in 1878, is a magnificent glass palace filled with exotic plants and boasting a balmy Mediterranean climate. The Garden Society, dating back to 1842, is currently being restored to its former glory. Exhibition architect Ulf Nordfjell has designed some contemporary additions such as a modern rose park which is well worth the visit.

The Old City Hall

The Old City Hall

The Old City Hall and Kronhusbodarna are interesting in a historical point of view. Built in 1642 – 55 as a magazine for the armed forces´ grain and weapons arsenal, the old City Hall is the oldest secular building in Gothenburg. The building has been a garrison church and history musuem. Today the old City Hall houses as a rehearsal and concert hall for the Gothenburg Wind Orchestra. Aslo pay visit to the Kronhusbodarna building which homes a goldsmith, a glass-hut, a potter, an old-fashioned country shop, a watchmaker and a gift shop. Enjoy a cup of coffee in the nice café with fireplace and white vaults.

The Göteborg Cathedral

The Göteborg Cathedral

The Göteborg Cathedral, in Swedish called Domkyrkan was built in 1815 and was designed by C.W Carlberg. You will find it on Västra Hamngatan. This is nice place for thoughtfulness, peace and quiet. The cathedral is open to visitors every day, and if you are lucky you can even catch a concert playing in the church.

At Kungstorget square you find First Hotel Avalon, and there you´ll also find The Market Hall (Saluhallen). This is the biggest marketplace in Gothenburg, with vegetables, fresh fruit, farm eggs, flowers and a lot more. The Market Hall (Saluhallen) was built in 1889 and here you find everthing you need to fill up your picnic bag from fresh products from the west coast to a wide range of international foods.
